As Vanity Fair contributing editor Peter Biskind reports in August’s cover story, the talented but troubled Australian actor Heath Ledger didn’t care about fame or awards. “He was ready to bust out of the gate, but he didn’t want to step on the gas and become something that he didn’t want to become: a matinee idol,” his friend and agent, Steven Alexander, says.

Like it or not, though, Ledger was a screen idol, with more than a dozen film credits to his name. After his tragic death, in 2008, he was awarded a posthumous Oscar for his performance in The Dark Knight, but was that really his best performance?
